自己紹介

As a researcher and educator, I am primarily interested in the dimension of intercultural exchange. My outlook on English education flows from my own research into the legacies of Euro-American colonialism in East Asia, especially concerning the simplifying and self-fulfilling prophecy of the ‘clash of civilisations’, where, as Rudyard Kipling put it, ‘East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.’ The challenge of rethinking Japan in a way that complicates this premise forms the core of my teaching. My aim is to help students understand themselves and other cultures in a more complex and historically informed way.
