Exchange Student's Story: Studying Twice at Chukyo University and Engaging with the International Exchange Volunteer Organization

Mr. Isaac Jacob Romano, an exchange student from USA

Isaac studied abroad at Chukyo University from the University of Alaska Southeast during the spring semester of 2024 and returned to continue his studies in the spring semester of 2025. While diligently learning Japanese, he actively participated in the international exchange volunteer organization VOICE (Volunteer Organization for InterCulture Exchange) as both a participant and an operational supporter. He reflects on his time at Chukyo University as “one of the most wonderful experiences of my life,” significantly contributing to his personal growth.

During his first study abroad, he was impressed by the Nagoya campus, where many students spoke English and the international programs were well-developed. He also enjoyed the vibrant sports culture at the Toyota campus, which offered a good balance between academics and athletics. After returning home, he wanted to further improve his Japanese skills, making Chukyo University the ideal place to balance academics and sports, leading him to choose the university again for his second study abroad.

Isaac, who enjoys helping others, resonated with VOICE’s activities, which organize various events for exchange students. During his second stay, he contributed to event preparations and improved English materials, deepening his understanding of Japanese culture and building strong ties with Japanese students and the local community. He actively participated in events with the Toyota Motor Corporation baseball team and a bus tour to the INAX Museum, where he learned about the history of globally active companies in Aichi Prefecture. Notably, during a joint event with Central Japan International Airport Co., Ltd. (Centrair), he engaged in all activities from preparation to exhibition, including creating materials and guiding visitors.

He says these experiences enriched his study abroad life and expresses enthusiasm for continuing to learn Japanese, with a future goal of supporting more people while living and working in Japan.

Message from Mr. Isaac

“Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime precious opportunity. If you have even a little interest, please come to Japan. At Chukyo University, you will learn a lot and have a wonderful time. I will continue studying Japanese and hope to eventually live and work in Japan, helping as many people as I can.”
